Description
17 and 18 West Street is a building from the 18th century that was refronted in the 19th century and has since undergone significant alterations. It has a tiled roof and stands three storeys tall. The exterior is cemented with rusticated quoins. Originally, there was a large parapet with a panel displaying the name of the inn, but this has been replaced by a plain modern parapet.
The building features three window bays. In the attic storey, there are sash windows. On the first floor, at each end, there are modern four-light casement windows set in frames that are transomed and mullioned. In the centre, there is a two-light casement window with a 19th-century frame, which has a stuccoed frame and a cornice above it, along with a balconette in front.
On the ground floor, modern plate-glass shop fronts flank a doorway that is accented by stuccoed pilasters with elaborate capitals and a plain entablature. A large modern flat cantilevered hood extends across the entire front above the ground floor. The western side of the building faces Tower Street and is constructed of red brick with alternating grey headers. This building was formerly known as the Eagle Inn.
