Description

15 and 16 West Street is a former school building, originally founded as Oliver Whitby School in 1702 and rebuilt in 1904 by architect Sir Reginald Blomfield. The structure is made of red brick and consists of three storeys with nine window bays and a slate gabled roof. It features a cornice with modillions above the first floor and a moulded cornice above the second floor. The central bay projects forward and has a broken pediment over the first floor, with a smaller rectangular pediment and ball finials over the second floor.

Pilasters flank the windows, and there is an entablature above the first-floor window that bears the school motto "Vis et Sapentia." The first floor has tall sash windows arranged in arcading with keystones above, while the second floor features oval windows with keystones, except for the central bay, which contains a sash window. The ground floor has a round arched doorway set in a wide rusticated frame, complete with a keystone and a cartouche displaying the arms of Oliver Whitby, the founder of the school, flanked by swags. On either side of the doorway, the ground floor is occupied by plate-glass shop fronts with large flat hoods that are cantilevered over. The school closed in 1950, with the remaining pupils transferred to Christ's Hospital.
