Description
The Ship Hotel is an 18th-century building, likely dating from around 1780. It is constructed of red brick, with some areas of the brickwork having been renewed. The hotel stands three storeys tall, with modern attics added, and features four very large windows and four modern dormers. The sash windows are set in reveals with flat arches, and they retain slender glazing bars, with brick and rubbed brick voussoirs. The ground floor windows have narrow fluted frames, and there are iron balconies on the first floor. The entrance boasts a good doorway with Ionic columns, a pediment, and a semi-circular fanlight, along with a six-panel moulded door in panelled reveals. Inside, there is a very fine staircase with a colonnade on the first floor landing and plaster mouldings on the ceilings. The Ship Hotel, along with Nos 50 to 63 North Street and No 5 Guildhall Street, forms a group of buildings of architectural significance.
