Description
These two houses, numbered 7 and 9 Waterloo Square, were built around 1815 to 1820 by W K and Daniel Wonham. They are not a matching pair and have undergone alterations since their original construction. The houses are three storeys high, with three windows on the front of number 7 and two windows on the front of number 9. They are faced with stucco. A modillioned eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. Most of the original window glazing bars have been lost, with the exception of the original French windows and one sash window, both located on the first floor of number 7.
Number 7 features an iron balcony on its first floor, supported by seven slender columns below. A decorative hood originally sheltered this balcony, but it has since been replaced with corrugated iron, painted to resemble the original. Number 9 retains its original wooden balcony, supported by three iron columns that appear to have been added later. Number 7 has a doorway encased in a fluted frame, while number 9 has a doorway with a curved hood above the entrance.
Numbers 7 to 17 on the west side of Waterloo Square form a notable group.
