Description

69 High Street is a mid-19th century terraced house. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, featuring two grey brick string courses and grey bricks in the pointed relieving arches above the windows. It has Pulborough stone dressings and kneelers. The first floor is timber-framed with ornamental bracing and rendered nogging, topped with a pitched tile roof. The red brick chimneys have cornicing, grey brick string courses, and battered lower courses of Pulborough stone. A red brick parapet caps the west gable of the roof, with Pulborough stone coping and kneelers.

The building is two storeys tall, with a plinth that has upper courses that are battered. On the south side, there is one planked cellar door and one cellar window. The reveals of all windows and doors are partly chamfered to simulate "Caernarvon" arches. The ground floor features two windows and one door with two lights above it on the east side facing High Street, and three windows and one door on the south side facing Maltravers Street. The first floor jetties along the entire south side and the northern half of the east side. The rafters have concave moulding at their ends, and the jetty is supported by three wooden brackets on stone corbels along the south side and one on the east side.

On the first floor, there are three windows on the east side, with a hipped gable above the northernmost window. The south side has two windows, one with a hipped gable above and the other with a pitched gable above. All gables feature projecting purlins with moulded ends and chamfered bargeboards. Most windows have mullions and transoms, except for the central window on the first floor of the east side, and all have casements with diagonal iron glazing bars. The building retains original iron drainpipes, brass door handles, and bell pulls.

Nos 67 and 71 form a group with Nos 2 to 10 (even) Maltravers Street and with the raised pavements on the north side of Maltravers Street.
