Description

These are two mid-19th century terraced houses. The ground floors are built of red brick with black brick stringcourses and voussoirs, while the first floors have timber framing. The roofs are pitched and tiled, with bands of fish-scale tiles, and the chimneys are red brick with black brick stringcourses and cornicing.

Each house has two storeys. Both have a segment-headed oak door with ashlar steps leading up to it, with three steps to number 2 and two to number 4. They have a single 3-light casement window with a segmental relieving arch and diagonal lead glazing bars to the ground floor. The first floor is jettied, with a coved moulding at the ends of the joists, supported by ashlar corbels. Each house has a gable end to the street, featuring bargeboards and some projecting purlins. Number 2 has a single-light easement window and a two-light casement, both with diagonal lead glazing bars. Number 4 has a single-light casement window and a mullion-and-transom window with casements, also with diagonal lead glazing bars.

Numbers 2 and 4 form a group with numbers 6 to 10 (even) on Maltravers Street, and with numbers 69 and 71 High Street, along with the raised pavements on the north side of Maltravers Street.
