Description
No. 71 High Street is a late 18th-century front added to an earlier house. It features some grey headers and has a tile-hung gable with a pitched tile roof. The overhanging eaves are masked by a moulded brick cornice. The building is two storeys high with a gable at the north end. On the first floor, there are three ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, and on the ground floor, there are two canted bays with double-hung sash windows that also have glazing bars. Below the south bay, there is an iron grille leading to the cellar. The entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight, set within a plain reveal of two semi-circular concentric brick arches, and accessed by three ashlar steps. There is a 19th-century red brick extension to the west, which has a pitched tile roof with overhanging eaves and elaborately corniced red brick chimneys. This extension is also two storeys high and features a three-window range of casements with diagonal iron glazing bars, two of which have hipped gables above. No. 71, along with No. 69, forms a group with Nos. 2 to 10 (even) Maltravers Street and the raised pavements on the north side of Maltravers Street.
