Description

The Bognor Regis and District War Memorial is made of Cornish grey granite and is located set back from the road at the corner of Belmont Street and Clarence Road, in front of the Grade II-listed Bognor Regis Town Hall. The memorial features a tall, rectangular pillar topped with a decorated entablature, which stands on a plinth raised on a three-stepped base.

At each corner of the pillar, four margents appear to hang from the entablature. The front of the pillar has a wreath carved in low relief that encloses the dates 1914/1918. Below this, an inscription reads "TO THE MEMORY OF THE/ GLORIOUS DEAD/ OF BOGNOR & DISTRICT/ 1939/ 1945."

On the front face of the plinth, there is another inscription that states, “SONS OF THIS PLACE LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID/ THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD/ THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT YOU WHO LIVE MAY REAP/ A RICHER HARVEST ERE YOU FALL ASLEEP.” This text is taken from Reverend Royds’ ‘Inscriptions Suggested for War Memorials’. Additionally, a small bronze plaque attached to the uppermost step of the base reads, "THE NAMES OF THOSE WHOSE MEMORY IS/ HERE COMMEMORATED WILL BE FOUND ON THE/ TABLET IN THE VESTIBULE OF THE/ WAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL."

Surrounding the memorial, there are four small flower vases, one at each corner of the bottom step. On either side of the memorial, two freestanding stone walls display Welsh slate panels that bear the names of 260 individuals who fell during the Second World War. These additional features are not considered of special interest.
