Description

This is an early 19th-century terrace of cottages at 8-18 Arun Street. The front is built of nodular flint with galleting, dressed with yellow brick, and features giant pilasters framing each pair of cottages. The rear elevation and the south end are in beach flint with red brick dressings. The roofs are slate, hipped, and have yellow and red brick chimneys.

The cottages are two storeys high, with Nos 12 and 14 having attics. A moulded brick cornice, with a cyma recta profile, runs along the top. Each cottage has one window range. All windows are segment-headed double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor windows of Nos 8 and 10, and Nos 16 and 18, are flush-framed and paired under segmental brick relieving arches. Above these arches are blind segment-headed window recesses. Each pair of cottages has a segment-headed doorway, with 6-panelled doors except for No 18, which has a 4-panelled door. Nos 12 and 14 each have one attic dormer with casement windows and glazing bars. No 8 has a two-storey red brick extension to the north, featuring a planked double door with a 4-centred arch and Pulborough stone courses at the springer level. There is also a planked loft door on the first floor.

Nos 4 to 18 (even) and Nos 1 to 13 (odd) form a group with Nos 67, 69 & 69A Tarrant Street.
