Description
The Arundel War Memorial is a tall Latin cross made of Wealden sandstone, featuring Celtic crosses carved in relief on both the front and rear faces, resembling temporary wooden grave markers. It has an octagonal base divided into three stages: upper, middle, and lower plinths, which originally stood on three steps and have splayed corners. The lowest stage is surrounded by a low wall made of brick and flint, topped with a low metal railing.
The upper stage of the plinth is inscribed with the dates 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. A dedication and the names of those who died in the First World War are engraved on limestone slabs around the middle stage, stating that those named were among those who answered the call of King and Country, enduring hardship and sacrifice for the sake of freedom. There are 93 names listed.
The middle stage has a low railing added after 1921, while the names of 26 individuals who died in the Second World War are recorded on limestone blocks set into the top of the lower stage. A flower bed is situated between the enclosing wall and the lower stage. The memorial is located within a cobbled area, with raised flower beds at either end that complement the flower bed around the base of the memorial.
