Description
The Norfolk Hotel, located at No 22 on High Street, is a 17th century building constructed between 1783 and 1785. It features red brick with rubbed brick voussoirs on the ground floors, a moulded brick cornice at the eaves level, and a parapet of red brick and grey headers in Flemish bond that conceals the roof. The hotel has a hipped slate roof and stands three storeys tall, with a stringcourse above each floor. There are five ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The central window on the first and second floors has three lights, and the first-floor window includes a segmental fanlight above all three lights. Below this is a semi-circular archway with spur stones, leading to a stable yard, which is accessed through gates with fielded panels. A rendered fascia board displays "Norfolk Arms" in an early 19th century style. Historically, the Norfolk Arms was associated with the Duke of Norfolk in the 18th century and served as the political center of the Whig party in Arundel, as well as the venue for Corporation meetings until the Town Hall was built. The hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 18 to 34 (even), the Castle Walls, and the Town Gates.
