Description
18 and 20 High Street are two buildings dating from 1890, as indicated by a dated rainwater head. They are constructed of red brick, featuring a diaper pattern above the entrance to No 20. The buildings include Pulborough stone quoins, dressings, and stringcourses, with the entire ground floor of No 18 and the flushwork in the gable above the entrance to No 20 also made of Pulborough stone. The roofs are tiled, and there are red brick chimneys with grouped stacks, panelled sides, and cornicing.
No 18 and one bay of No 20 have three storeys, while the remainder of No 20 has four storeys. The buildings consist of six bays, each topped with a gable that has Pulborough coping. The ground floor features canted bay shopfronts, which are flanked by doorways with "Caernarvon" arches. Above these, there are mullion and transom windows.
Nos 18 to 34 (even) along with the Castle Walls and Town Gates form a group.
