Description

This is a late 18th century house and shop, likely built on the site of a lower house dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. The building is constructed of red brick with a pitched slate roof and lead detailing. It is three storeys high and features an eaves cornice decorated with brick modillions shaped like a cyma recta curve. The upper floors have four ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor contains two late 19th century shop windows: one is plate glass with glazing bars in the upper section, and the other is a canted bay window with moulded mullions, glazing bars, and a cornice. The doorway has unfluted Roman Doric three-quarter columns, a dentilled pediment, a semi-circular fanlight, and panelled reveals. The door itself has two fielded panels, with the upper half glazed and featuring glazing bars, along with an original brass letter box, accessed by two ashlar steps. Early 19th century iron railings are present in front of and behind the cellar doors, with the front railings featuring distinctive “Egyptian” finials. A northeast corner section displays a two-storey wall of dressed flint beneath later brickwork, including a blocked first-floor two-light sandstone mullioned window from the late 16th or early 17th century. The building is part of a group of significance with Nos 18 to 34 (even), the Castle Walls and Town Gates.
