Description

Nos 43 to 47 Tarrant Street are late 18th-century terraced houses. The front is stuccoed, while the rest is made of nodular flint with brick dressings. They have a slate roof and stand three storeys high. The buildings feature a brick modillion eaves cornice and stringcourses above the ground and first floors.

There are seven ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the first and second floors, except for the central window on the second floor of No 45, which is blocked, and No 47, which lacks glazing bars. No 43 has a segmental bay with three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the ground floor, along with a door that has six fielded panels and a blind fanlight, set in a doorcase with Tuscan columns supporting a dentilled pediment. No 45 features a canted bay window with three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, and a six-panelled door (partly glazed) with panelled reveals in a moulded frame topped with a pediment.

No 47 has a shop front that includes a partly glazed door with marginal glazing bars and an oblong fanlight in a moulded surround with a pediment above, as well as an oblong bay window with glazing bars and a cornice. No 49 showcases an order of Tuscan pilasters on the ground floor, which support an entablature framing a fascia board that breaks upward in the middle with a semi-circular arch. The pilasters are arranged irregularly in three pairs, framing two doors with two moulded panels each, which are partly glazed and set in deep reveals leading up two ashlar steps. One door is flanked by a plate glass shop window with rounded shoulders, above a plinth with a recessed and moulded panel.

Nos 43 to 47 and the wall between Nos 49 and 51 form a cohesive group.
