Description

The Shoreham-by-Sea Nursing Home, formerly the Church of St. Peter and presbytery, dates from around 1860 and is designed in a decorated style. It features cobblestone construction with ashlar dressings and plain tiled roofs with parapetted gables. The church includes a nave with a west porch, a chancel, and a north transeptal chapel. The sides of the nave and chancel are buttressed, with window dripmoulds that continue as a string course between the windows and moulded brackets at the eaves cornice. A tall west lancet is flanked by a buttress, leading to a gabled and stepped stone-tiled bell-cote above the gabled west porch. The church has a four-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, with tall lancet windows featuring 20th-century glazing. Inside, there is a west gallery and an arch-braced, trussed roof with wind-braces. The marble altar is adorned with an embossed reredos and surround. Attached to the left is the former presbytery, which is two storeys with attics, featuring a gable front with a large wooden board. The second floor has one casement window in an ashlar surround, the first floor has two similar windows, and the ground floor has a modern plate glass window and a modern glazed door with a rectangular fanlight above.
