Description
The Town Hall, originally built as a Customs House in 1830 by Sidney Smirke, was converted for its current use in 1886. It features incised render with a band and a full entablature beneath a slate hipped roof, which has a stack on the left side. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay centre with a one-bay recessed wing to the right. Tall doubled pilasters on single pedestals flank the central bay and support a projecting pediment. The frieze under the pediment has raised lettering that reads 'Town Hall'. The windows are metal casements, with three on the first floor above the doors. The entrance is located in the central bay and consists of doubled panelled doors with a transom light above. It is topped by a moulded entablature hood on volute brackets, which carries a sculptural group representing the royal arms.
