Description

Numbers 14 to 18 are a group of late 18th-century cottages, with Number 18 being two stories and an attic. Numbers 14 to 17 are constructed of brick on a projecting plinth with a moulded capping, and have a brick dentil eaves cornice and an old tile roof. They are symmetrically designed, with four windows per cottage, each with four panes, and three doors arranged between the windows. The doors are four-panel, flush type, set in arched recesses. The door to Number 17 has been removed. The ground floor windows have slightly segmental heads. Number 18 is pebble-dashed, also with a projecting plinth and a small moulded eaves cornice, and has an old tile roof with flanking chimneys. It has three windows on the first floor, each with four panes and architrave frames, and two similar windows on the ground floor with plain frames. A six-panel door, with a vase knocker, is set within a doorcase featuring narrow pilasters, an entablature, and a pediment. The right-hand return front has a tile-hung gable with a moulded brick string on brick dentils at the foot. A painted inscription reads "Sampson Sampson. Licensed Maltster." Number 18 has slender front railings with small spear-shaped finials that rise alternately to two different heights, and standards with larger finials of a similar shape. These railings are attached to either end of the front of the house and to either side of the central doorway. The buildings are part of a wider group including listed buildings in Bridge Square, Firgrove Hill, Red Lion Lane, and numbers 57 and 59 Abbey Street.
