Description
Old Roof is an 18th-century building that has been refronted in the 19th century. It stands two storeys tall with three window bays and features an old tile hipped roof with lead ridges. The front is made of red brick and has a 19th-century bracket eaves cornice. On the upper floor, there is one segmental-headed sash window in the center, flanked by two square-headed sash windows, all without glazing bars. The ground floor has two 19th-century three-light splayed bay windows, also without glazing bars.
The doorway dates from the 18th century and includes a semi-circular fanlight with tracery above a six-panel door that has two fielded panels above. The door surround is from the 19th century, featuring pilasters, a rounded-headed moulded architrave with a vermiculated keystone, spandrel panels, and a moulded cornice. The south-west garden front has four bays, a brick eaves modillion cornice, and a painted brick front. It also includes a round-headed staircase window with stained-glass margin lights.
In the 19th century, the building was occupied by the Barratt family of the Red Lion Brewery. Old Roof is part of a group that includes other listed buildings on Figrove Hill (West side), Bridge Square, Red Lion Lane (North West Side), and Nos 57 and 59 Abbey Street.
