Description

The William Cobbett Public House is a 17th-century building located in Bridge Square. It is a two-storey structure made of red brick, set on a projecting plinth, with a string course at the first-floor level. The eaves feature a wooden band and an early 19th-century cut board eaves pelmet. The roof is covered with old tiles, and there are two chimneys: one on the left and a stooped chimney on the right, positioned at the angle formed by a projecting gabled wing that is timber-framed with plaster infilling, which was formerly known as Bridge Stores.

The main façade includes five two-light leaded casement windows with early 19th-century lights arranged in a long diamond pattern. There are also two five-light casements, which were likely originally four separate two-light windows that have since been joined together, and central half-glazed double doors that are sheltered by a cantilevered flat hood. The right wing has a small central attic casement and one casement window on the first floor. On the ground floor, there are three small two-light casement windows fitted with frosted glass panes.

This building is noted as the birthplace of William Cobbett and is part of a group of listed buildings in the area, including those in Bridge Square, Firgrove Hill, Red Lion Lane, and Abbey Street.
