Description

The Red Lion Brewery is a large, long L-shaped malthouse built between the mid-19th century and early 20th century. It consists of several connecting buildings of varying heights and shapes, constructed from red brick with gabled slate roofs. The internal spaces are divided into aisles by iron columns. The brewery has a prominent front along the River Wey, featuring five sections that rise to different heights, with two storeys and small segmental-headed openings at various levels. The site originally housed a tannery, and the current structure resulted from the combination of Barrett's Brewery, which developed in the west range from 1845, and Robert Simpson's maltings, which were established in the east part since the 1830s. At the time of the re-survey, the building was undergoing restoration. The listed buildings along Red Lion Lane (northwest side), Bridge Square, Firgrove Hill (west side), and Nos 57 and 59 Abbey Street form a group.
