Description

The south part of Number 11, known as The Old Cottage, is a 16th-century building that has been restored. It is two stories high and constructed of brick, with the upper section featuring a timber frame and plaster infilling. The roof is covered with old tiles. A small central gable is adorned with carved and moulded bargeboards and an inverted central pierced finial, which frames a small angular bay. This bay contains a five-light, two-tier mullioned transomed lead casement with a carved wooden sill, a moulded transom, and a carved and bracketed head rail beneath a smaller secondary gable that has similar bargeboards and a finial. The base of the secondary gable is rectangular, and the angular bay likely represents a restoration of a former rectangular bay window. The bay window is flanked by two small two-light leaded casements, with two additional similar casements on the first floor. There is a carved bracket supporting the bay. To the right on the ground floor are two larger casements that were formerly fitted with plain shutters, and to the left is a plain ledged door. The return end to the south features a tiled gable, and there is a large chimney with four square shafts. The building is illustrated in "Country Life" from July 3rd, 1942. The listed buildings in Bridge Square, Firgrove Hill (West Side), Red Lion Lane (North West Side), and Nos 57 and 59 Abbey Street form a group.
