Description

Farnham Library, also known as Vernon House, is a building from the 16th century that has been altered in the 18th century and later. It features a U-shaped street front with two storeys, rendered exterior, and a projecting plinth. The plain wall face rises to a parapet with stone coping, topped by a hipped old tile roof. The flanking wings, which were shortened in the 18th century, each have two windows on both the first and ground floors. The central wing has three windows and one small window above, with two windows and one small window below.

The entrance boasts a six-panel central door with a panel reveal and a doorcase supported by fluted Doric engaged columns. The entablature is broken forward over the columns and features a pediment. A segmental stone doorstep leads to the door. Two cast lead rainwater heads, dated 1727, likely mark the completion of the courtyard's rebuilding, along with the installation of new windows and doors. The original 16th-century stepped brick chimneys are located on the west side of the west wing. The south front is asymmetrical, highlighted by a two-storey segmental bow on the left side.

Historically, Charles I stayed at Vernon House on December 20, 1648, on his way to trial, as noted by a plaque on the west wing. Inside, some walls are partly panelled in oak, and there are tempera wall paintings from the 16th to 17th centuries in the upper north-west room. The building is part of a group with other listed buildings on the south-east side of West Street, including Nos 18, 37, 43, 45, and all the properties from Nos 19 to 46, along with a wrought iron screen in front of Vernon House.
