Description
Bethune House is a late 18th-century building of three storeys, situated on the north-west side of West Street. Constructed of brick on a chamfered plinth, it features a moulded wooden frieze and cornice supported by pairs of cut scroll brackets. A brick parapet is topped with stone coping, and it has five windows to the upper floors. The ground floor has four windows, and a central six-panel door. This door has a scroll brass knocker, radiation, and a wreathed fanlight, all set within an arched, panelled reveal. The archway is framed by a narrow architrave that transitions into a doorcase featuring fluted and one-third reeded Doric pilasters with a broken dentilled entablature. Decorative honeysuckle adorns the frieze, and a small, open dentilled pediment completes the door surround. There are two cellar windows. A two-storey extension, incorporating No. 88A, was added later to the left. This extension has two windows on the first floor; the ground floor originally featured a single three-light window, now replaced by a single window. The ground floor door is framed by panelled reveals, a semi-circular fanlight with ogival tracery, pilasters, richly decorated cut scroll brackets, a modillion cornice, and a triple keystones.
Bethune House, together with Nos. 75 to 94 (inclusive) including Nos. 86A and 88A, forms a group of buildings of group value.
