Description
Lord Knyvett's Adult Education Centre, located at Nos 110 and 112 on the south-east side of High Street in Stanwell, dates from around 1624, as indicated by a tablet displaying the coat of arms of its founder, Lord Knyvett. Originally designed as a two-storey pattern school, it featured separate entrances for boys and girls. The left portion of the building has been converted into one high room.
Architecturally, the centre showcases corbelled brick verges beneath a tiled roof and is topped with two brick chimneys, one of which is rendered. At the garret level, there is a single light moulded window. The building features two-light double-rebated mullion windows, with four on the first floor and two on the ground floor to the right. The left section has tall 20th-century two-light double-transomed windows flanking the entrance.
There are two doorways, both now with cement-rendered surrounds and pediments above. The right-hand doorway is arched, while the left is plain and has a tablet inscribed with text above it. The building is a good example of early 17th-century brickwork, characterized by narrow bricks and an irregular bond. The right-hand return has a gable-lit attic, and there is a single-storey 20th-century extension with one window to the left. The east return gable features the base of a finial at the apex and a moulded brick bullseye window. Additionally, there are two dormered wall chimneys at the rear and a Sun Fire Insurance Mark above the right-hand tall window. The interior retains an original staircase.
