Description

The Stanwell War Memorial is a war memorial erected after World War I to honor the men of Stanwell who lost their lives in the conflict, with additional commemoration for those who died during World War II added later.

Constructed from Portland stone, the monument stands approximately 3.8 meters high and features a tapering, faceted column on a rectangular base. The base is adorned with large carved scrolls and displays a roll of honour on both the north and south faces, above which is carved a setting sun. Two steps lead up to a rectangular plinth that supports the column.

The north face of the plinth has the inscription: THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY / THE PARISHIONERS OF STANWELL / IN HONOUR OF OUR GLORIOUS DEAD / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE CAUSE OF / LIBERTY AND FREEDOM IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919 / AND / THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939-1945

The roll of honour on the north and south faces lists a total of 55 names, while the east and west faces bear the names of 25 individuals who died in action during World War II.

The memorial is enclosed by a post and chain fence and is situated on a small green in the center of Stanwell, near the Grade I listed church of St. Mary.

The memorial was erected after World War I to honor the men of Stanwell who served and died during the conflict, although the architect and exact date of construction are not known. Additional inscriptions were later added to commemorate those who served and died in World War II.

The Stanwell War Memorial is designated for its significance as a lasting tribute to the sacrifices made by the community in both World Wars, its architectural interest due to its Baroque design in Portland stone, and its group value with St Mary's Church and other listed buildings along the High Street.
