Description

The Old Grammar School is a former school building, now serving as a parish room, dated 1696. It is a single-storey structure that was rebuilt after 1941. The exterior features Flemish bond brick with a chamfered sandstone plinth, a moulded cornice, a parapet, and plain pinnacles. There is a square tower facing the churchyard. The building has two storeys and a one-window range. Mid-20th century four-light painted wood mullioned windows are present, and all windows throughout the building have brick flat arches with keystones.

On the left return side, there is a 20th-century eight-panelled door with a 2-light casement window above it. An octagonal open cupola made of painted wood features ogee arches, and the roof is bell-cast with lead covering. An elaborate wrought iron weather vane, which includes a gilded ball, scrollwork, gilded lettering, a flag vane, and a finial, adorns the structure.

A screen wall set back on the left steps down in two stages, with the upper section featuring a quadrant curve. A round-arched doorway with a keystone and imposts leads to a 20th-century eight-panelled door. Above this doorway is a stone inscription panel with a moulded surround, which records the founding of the school in 1596, its rebuilding, and the names of the Receivers and Governors.

At the back, there is a single-storey range that has a dentil cornice and a plain-tile hipped roof, with a four-window range facing Vicarage Street. The interior has not been inspected.
