Description
The Nuneaton War Memorial is a pink granite structure located in the northern part of Riversley Park, aligned with the Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery and the Boer War memorial. It features a tall Celtic cross with five hemispherical bosses on the cross head. The cross shaft rises from a large, square tapering plinth with a battered foot, which stands on three low steps made of a different stone. The bottom step is adorned with a low ornamental rail of twisted iron, painted black.
The front face of the plinth is decorated with a carved relief of a wreath suspended from a ribbon, beneath which is the main dedicatory inscription: "IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN/ OF NUNEATON AND NEIGHBOURHOOD/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR/ KING & COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF ALL/ WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ 'THEIR NAMES SHALL LIVE FOR EVERMORE.'"
The names of those commemorated are recorded on the other faces of the plinth, on dark stone plaques inserted into it. On the rear, there is an inscription that reads: "THEY WROUGHT TO SAVE/ US & TO SAVE US DIED." This line comes from the temporary memorial that was in place before the current monument was erected in the park.
