Description

The Midland Bank is a building constructed in 1898 by H. Goddard of Leicester. It features red brick with stone dressings and a slate hipped roof. The structure has a rectangular plan with projecting pavilions at the corners, facing Newdegate Street to the south and Newdegate Place to the east. There is a 20th-century single-storey extension on the west side. The design reflects Baroque and Wrenaissance styles.

The building stands two storeys high with an attic. The south elevation has a symmetrical arrangement of three bays, while the east elevation features a more complex arrangement of four bays. The projecting end bays are accentuated with rusticated quoins and open-bed segmental pediments that contain cartouches and festoons. A modillion cornice runs over the central bays. The ground floor is faced with rusticated ashlar on a plinth and has an entablature supported by rusticated Tuscan columns in the recessed centre bays. The projecting corners have large round-arch doorways with keystones and 20th-century glazed doors. The first floor has 6/9-pane sash windows set in moulded stone architraves, linked by a stone band.

The west elevation is simpler, featuring gables and the 20th-century rusticated ashlar extension with round arch windows and an entablature. The interior has not been inspected, but it appears that the banking halls have been altered with the addition of partitions and suspended ceilings.
