Description
No. 183 French Street is a house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of brown brick and features a hipped slate roof, which is obscured by a parapet. The building has two storeys, with diagonal brick eaves dentils that are missing from the centre, and chimney stacks located at the rear. There are two windows on both the first and ground floors, each topped with red gauged brick heads. To the left, there is a panelled door beneath a gauged brick head and a flat hood supported by scrolled iron braces.
On the left-hand return front, the brick is painted, and the first floor projects outward, featuring a balcony with iron railings. At the rear, the parapet has shaped end bays, and there is a keyed roundel above the first-floor sash windows.
This building is included for its group value, as it was formerly listed with No. 179 (Avondale) and No. 181 (Ellesmere).
