Description
The Horley War Memorial is a First World War memorial constructed in 1922, with later alterations to include names from the Second World War. It is built from polished granite, with stone steps and crazy paving.
The memorial features a stepped octagonal base, a rectangular plinth, a tall shaft, and a Celtic cross at the summit. Metal lettering is affixed to the granite surface throughout. The plinth gently flares at its base and displays a carved wreath on its front face. It carries the commemorative inscription "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN HONOUR / OF THE MEN OF HORLEY / WHO MADE / THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE." The names of those who died in the First World War are recorded on the other faces of the plinth and the middle step. The top step displays the inscription "THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD/ AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN;/ AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN, AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."
The lowest step includes three smaller plinths bearing the names of local servicemen who died in the Second World War, along with the inscription "AND / TO THE MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939-1945 FOR THEIR HONOUR / AND / OUR REMEMBRANCE."
The main shaft of the monument comprises two sections separated by a horizontal moulding. The lower section features four carved flower blooms contained within a vertical panel, while the upper section has a carved sword in relief. The shaft gently tapers upwards and supports the stripped-back Celtic cross.
The memorial stands on an octagonal area of crazy paving, which is slightly raised toward the rear. Two stone steps lead up to the memorial on either side, terminating in short granite plinths. A memorial garden surrounds the monument, with metal entrance gates, a path, and a paved seating area. A more recent area of crazy paving, lower than the original, is present along with a brick retaining wall at the rear. These landscape features and secondary structures are excluded from the listing.
