Description
No. 8 School Hill, also known as the former Golden Wheel and The Limes, is a Grade II listed building located on the east side of School Hill in Merstham. The northern part, known as The Golden Wheel, is a small timber-framed cottage that has been refaced with plaster at the front, while the north side is largely covered in painted brick, although some timber framing is still visible on the ground floor. It features a slate roof and a 3-light window at the splayed northwest angle of the first floor. The other windows are ordinary sash windows with intact glazing bars, and there is a small shop window on the ground floor of the west front.
The southern part, known as The Limes, is an 18th-century, two-storey cottage with two windows and wide proportions. It is constructed of red brick and has a hipped tiled roof. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set in new wood frames that do not quite fit the old cambered arches. There is a trellis-work wood porch with a hipped wood roof, and a modern projecting porch has been added to the northern part.
Nos. 8 to 12 (even) form a group.
