Description
The Merstham War Memorial is a Celtic cross monument built in 1921 to commemorate the 90 local men who died in the First World War. After 1945, the names of 35 individuals who died in the Second World War were added. The memorial is constructed from granite and features applied metal lettering. It is located on School Hill, near the junction with London Road. The memorial consists of a roughly hewn Celtic cross, with a relief-carved sword on its front, set upon a tapered, square plinth and base. Applied lettering on the front of the cross shaft reads "IN MEMORY / OF / THE MEN OF / MERSTHAM / WHO LAID DOWN / THEIR LIVES / FOR / THEIR COUNTRY / IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918." Below this, the names of 90 local men who died in the First World War are inscribed on the front face of the plinth. An inscription on the east face of the plinth, marked with applied lettering reading "TO THE MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR / THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR / 3 SEP 1939 – 15 AUG 1945”, commemorates those who died in the Second World War, with the names of 35 fallen individuals recorded below.
