Description

The Old Church House is a house that was formerly a rectory, dating from the late 16th century. It is a four-bay timber-framed structure with a hearth at the back, and a brick house was added to the front in 1765. There have been some alterations made in the mid-19th century. The exterior is stuccoed with incised lines, while the side elevation is pebble dashed. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring brick chimneystacks. The house has two storeys, with the front elevation displaying five sash windows, including 12-pane windows on the first floor set in moulded architraves, and taller similar windows on the ground floor. The entrance features a pedimented doorcase with brackets. Other decorative elements include a modillion cornice, a stringcourse, and a plinth. The left side elevation has tripartite sashes.

Inside, there is a lounge at the rear that contains a roll-moulded axial beam from around 1600 and floor joists. The fireplaces in the house are bolection moulded. The kitchen features exposed beams with two-inch chamfers. On the first floor, there are exposed timbers, including arched braces and a clasped purlin roof. The 18th-century wing has a 19th-century staircase and two fireplaces that were brought in, but the roof remains original with an angled queen strut and through purlins, reusing older timbers, some of which are smoke blackened. The well roof has been later ceiled over.
