Description
The dovecote located in the grounds to the north of Wellhead is a 14th-century structure that was originally situated on the land now occupied by Merstham Station. When the railway was constructed, it was moved to its current location and re-erected on a 19th-century foundation made of red brick with blue headers. The dovecote is a tall, round building constructed of coursed freestone, featuring ogee-headed openings. Inside, the walls are lined with stone shelves spaced approximately 18 inches apart, which are integral to the wall construction. Each shelf has nesting holes at intervals of about 2 feet 6 inches. Additionally, a short top stage made of knapped flint with red brick dressings and corbels supports an octagonal slated roof, which was also added in the 19th century.
