Description

The former stables and forge at Joliffe Yard, now used as a garage, date back to around 1809 and have been altered over time. The building is constructed of pinkish brick with some red brick dressings and features weatherboard, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It comprises a long range of one and two stories, with flat-roofed additions at either end that are not of special interest.

On the left side, there are three large, full-height entrances with basket arches made of red brick, which have later boarding and board doors. The right-hand section is slightly recessed and includes pilaster buttresses, with a wide doorway that has a board door inserted between two of these buttresses. Above this doorway is the top of another pilaster and a two-light window. To the left of this section, there is a segmental-arched two-light window with diamond-patterned vents above it, a blocked segmental-arched opening on the far left, and a single-flue stack in the front roof pitch.

This building was originally part of the terminus of the Surrey Iron Railway, a plateway for horse-drawn wagons that connected Wandsworth and Merstham. The railway was authorized by Parliament in 1803, and the Merstham section officially opened in 1805. The building is historically significant as a rare survivor from the early days of railway construction.
