Description
Weighbridge Cottage is a building located on the east side of London Road North in Merstham. It was constructed by Sir Edward Banks between 1803 and 1805 to serve as the weigh and toll-house for the Croydon, Merstham and Godstone Iron Railway, which operated from 1805 to 1859. This railway was an extension of the Surrey Iron Railway, recognized as the first public railway in the world, and it transported Merstham stone to Croydon and Wandsworth using horse-drawn trucks.
The cottage is made of coursed square blocks of Merstham chalk stone and has two storeys with two windows. It features a tiled roof, modern leaded casements, and a central four-panel door. On the left side, there is a later canted bay with a hipped roof, and there are modern additions at the rear. A plaque from Surrey County Council identifies it as a historic building.
