Description
This milestone, believed to date from around 1755, was placed in its current location in 1823 at the intersection of the M25 with the A217 (Junction 8) on Reigate Hill. It is made of Portland stone and has a square shape with a low pyramidal top. The south-west face features an inscription in Roman letters, which is thought to have been carved in 1755, stating: ‘LONDON / 19 / SUTTON / 8’. The south-east face has an inscription in sans serif lettering, believed to have been carved in 1823, which reads: ‘BRIGHTON / 32 5/8 / REIGATE 15/8’. The lettering on this face is very worn.
