Description

Reigate Hill Footbridge is a footbridge designed in 1908 and completed in 1910 by L G Mouchel and Partners, utilizing the Mouchel Hennebique system of reinforced concrete. It spans 97 feet and is 8 feet wide, weighing 3 tons. The bridge features a single span segmental arch with spandrels divided into four sections on each side. Above the arch, there is cast iron pierced balustrading with larger principal supports topped with ball finials.

Historically, L G Mouchel and Partners were the UK agents for the French Hennebique system of reinforced concrete. The first reinforced concrete bridge was built in 1902, followed by the first open spandrel bridge in 1905. This footbridge is notable as the earliest reinforced concrete footbridge in the country, alongside Alum Chine, which has a shorter span of 67 feet. The structure demonstrates technological advancement with its narrow beams, open design, and the achievement of a 97-foot uninterrupted span, showcasing the potential of reinforced concrete.
