Description
Deepdene icehouse is an 18th-century subterranean structure, built around 1769 and later enlarged in the early 19th century. It is constructed from red brick and is set into an earth bank, with the 19th-century entrance located to the south. Visitors descend steps into a larder, which features a corridor leading east to the entrance of the circular ice chamber.
The original section of the icehouse consists of a subterranean chamber shaped like a cup and dome, with a flattened bottom. This chamber is approximately 4 meters in diameter at its widest point and about 5 meters high. It is lined with handmade red bricks arranged in a header bond, and the walls are nearly vertical. There is a sealed circular opening at the top of the structure.
The 19th-century addition includes a set of brick steps that descend northward into a brick-lined square larder, measuring around 2 meters by 2 meters. The north wall of this larder features a circular opening, about 0.3 meters in diameter, allowing natural light. To the east of the larder is a narrow brick-lined corridor, approximately 2 meters high, 2 meters wide, and 4 meters long, with evidence of door frames at both ends. A shallow brick-lined alcove is located to the north of the corridor, while to the east, the corridor opens into the 18th-century ice chamber at its mid-point in height. The remains of a timber stair suggest that this was the access point for ice collection in the 19th century.
