Description
Middle Lodge is a lodge that was later converted into a house, built in 1840 by Henry Thomas Hope in the Italianate style. It has an L-shaped plan and is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and a channelled sandstone chimneystack. The building features a deep wooden bracket eaves cornice. The projecting left side wing has paired round-headed windows, while the setback right-hand bay includes a ground floor round-headed window. There is a porch at the angle of the L, which has a sandstone cornice and a round-headed arch with a keystone, impost blocks, and pilasters; this porch has been filled in during the 20th century with a panelled door. A 20th-century flat-roofed extension is located to the left, built with similar materials. Henry Thomas Hope also made significant alterations to the main house, Deepdene House, which was demolished in 1969, and he built North Lodge. Middle Lodge was sold as a private residence in 1922-23.
