Description

Pear Tree Cottage is a late 16th century or early 17th century lobby entrance house with a parlour crosswing, which was later subdivided into cottages but is now back in single ownership. The cottage has a timber frame set on a flint plinth, with 19th century painted brick infill at the front. Although the timber framing is painted over, it is still visible beneath the paint. The parlour wing features a roughcast ground floor and a first floor that is hung with bands of curved, pointed, and plain tiles. The roof is tiled, with a brick stack on the right, a central rendered stack, and an 18th century external brick stack on the left side. The building has two storeys and three windows, with 20th century casement windows. The ground floor includes a doorcase with an early 19th century wooden pedimented head on brackets and a four-panelled door, as well as an outshut to the rear. There is an early 17th century plank door on the side elevation.

Inside, the lounge features a bressummer with a chamfer and run-out stops, a bread oven, a spice or salt hole, and a rush light mark. The dining room has a spine beam with one brick chamfer with lamb's tongue stops and a cambered bressummer over the open fireplace. The original rear wall of the house, which is under the outshut, has an exposed curved tension trace. There is a 19th century four-panelled door and matchboard panelling. On the upper floor, a late 16th century jowled upright post is visible, but the roof appears to be an 18th century structure with angled queen struts.
