Description

The White Horse Hotel, originally known as the Cross House due to its sign of the Cross of the Knights of St John, is a building constructed in two sections with a carriage entrance to the yard between them. The south-west section is a timber-framed structure that was refronted in the 18th century. It has two storeys and features seven windows, rough plaster, gables at each end, and a modillion eaves cornice connecting them. There is a string course above the ground floor and a tiled roof. The ground floor has large 19th-century bay windows below the gables, with glazing bars otherwise intact. Inside, there are ceiling beams. The entrance to the yard is marked by a bay window above it and a projecting gable above that.

The north-east section of the hotel dates from the early 19th century and also has two storeys with five windows. It is made of painted brick and includes a string course, eaves cornice, and a tiled hipped roof, with glazing bars intact. The doorway features pilasters and a projecting cornice above. There was once another carriage entrance at the north-east end of this section, which has since been converted into a shop, with two windows above, a cornice, and a parapet. The hotel is part of a group with Nos 132 to 156 (even) and Nos 164 to 170 (even).
