Description

The barn, stables, and cartshed located to the south-east of Maddox Farmhouse date from the late 18th century or early 19th century. This range of buildings is situated on the east side of a former farmyard and now serves as a garage, workshop, store, and entrance portal. The structure features timber frames set on brick plinths, with weatherboard cladding and red tile roofs. It has a linear plan oriented north-south, with the barn occupying the southern half, the cartshed at the northern end, and the stable positioned between them.

The barn consists of three bays and has wagon entrances on opposite sides. The entrance on the west side, facing the farmyard, retains its original opening with straight angle-braces and has been fitted with double doors and a wooden screen above. The entrance on the east side is now fixed. At the southern end of the barn, there is a two-bay addition featuring two pairs of double doors and a band of vertical-paned glazing above. The roof has a half-hip at the north end.

The stable is a low single-storey building with a deep roof, featuring a central stable door with handmade strap hinges and a small wooden-shuttered window on each side. The cartshed is an open-sided structure with two bays, matching the height of the barn, and includes straight angle-braces from the posts to the arcade plates, along with a weatherboarded gable wall.

Inside, the buildings mostly have softwood frames marked by carpenters' marks. The barn showcases curved braces to the tie-beams and queen-strut roof trusses, while the stable includes a manger and hayrack. This range of buildings forms the boundary between the farmyard and the road, significantly contributing to the character of the north end of the village street and serving as the principal element of the group on this site.
