Description

Rose Cottage is probably a 17th-century house that was rebuilt in the mid-18th century, with a cottage added later. The date 1746 is inscribed on bricks at the first floor. It is now a single dwelling. The house is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with a red tile roof. Originally, it had a single-depth plan with two units, but a third unit was added to the right-hand side, and a lean-to addition was built to the rear. The main part of the house has two storeys and three bays, with a vertical joint between the second and third bays. A doorway with a pegged wooden doorcase, a board door, and a modern open porch is located to the left of this joint. This section features three segmental-headed two-light casement windows on the ground floor, and two two-light casements on the first floor. The addition to the right includes a large three-light casement on each floor. Gable chimneys are present. A rear lean-to addition has two external chimneys on its rear wall. Inside, there is a rebuilt rectangular fireplace containing an original salt recess, a large tie-beam in the first bay, and one visible windbrace in the second bay.
