Description
Manor Farm Tithe Barn is a large aisled barn, now used as a store, likely built in the 17th century and possibly extended. It has recently been re-roofed. The barn features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding and a red pantile roof, with plain tiles on the porches. It has a long rectangular plan with ten bays aligned on a north-south axis, and aisles on both sides. There are opposed wagon entrances located in the fourth and seventh bays from the north end.
On the west side, the wagon doorways are highlighted by prominent porches with hipped roofs, and the two bays between these porches are set back and not aisled. On the east side, the doorways are recessed, and all doorways have board double doors with strap hinges. The south gable end features a damaged double stable door and a loading door above, both with strap hinges. The roof is steeply pitched and extends down to low eaves.
Inside, the barn has an impressively complete timber frame, which has been slightly altered. It consists of unjowelled posts with three-way arch-bracing to the tie-beams and aisle-plates. Some major joints are reinforced with iron straps, and some braces have been replaced with straight timbers. Arch-bracing is present in the unaisled west side of the fifth and sixth bays. The roof features collar-trusses with raked queen-struts, although the rafters have been replaced and a ridge-plank added. There are also some scratched carpenter's marks. The bay at the south end is partitioned to function as a stable and has a loft above.
