Description

LITTLE BOOKAM MANOR HOUSE LANE TQ/15/SW (east side) 5/199 Manor Farm Tithe Barn 7.9.51

GV II

Large aisled barn, now store. Probably C17, and perhaps extended; recently re- roofed. Timber frame with weatherboard cladding, red pantile roof (plain tiles on porches). Long rectangular 10-bay plan on north-south axis, with aisles on both sides and opposed waggon-entrances in the 4th and 7th bays from the north end. On the west side the wagon doorways have prominent porches with hipped roofs, and the 2 bays between them are set back (ie not aisled); on the east side the doorways are recessed, and all these doorways have board double doors with strap hinges; the south gable end has a double stable door (damaged), and a loading door above, also with strap hinges; the roof is steeply pitched and carried down to low eaves. Interior: an impressively-complete timber frame, slightly altered, consisting of unjowelled posts with 3-way arch-bracing to the tie-beams and the aisle-plates (some major joints reinforced with iron straps, and some braces replaced with straight timbers); arch-bracing in the unaisled west side of the 5th and 6th bays; a collar-truss roof with raked queen-struts (but the rafters replaced and a ridge-plank added); some scratched carpenters' marks. The bay at the south end is partitioned as a stable and lofted.
