Description
Half Moon Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It likely dates from the late 15th century or early 16th century and originally functioned as a hall-house, with a ceiling and chimney stack added in the 17th century. The building features a timber frame with brick casing at the ground floor and nogging above, some of which is arranged in a herringbone pattern. It has a red tile roof and a brick chimney stack.
The cottage has a linear, 5-bay single-depth plan, with the first bay possibly being an early addition. It has two low storeys and five structural bays, but only three windows on the first floor. The timber framing at the front includes all six wall-posts, although some are concealed or removed at the ground floor. There is arch-bracing to the wallplate in the third, fourth, and fifth bays, along with various studs. The fourth bay features two board doors. On the ground floor, the second, third, and fifth bays have 2-light casement windows, with the window in the third bay altered. On the first floor, the first bay has a 2-light casement, the second bay has coupled 2-light casements divided by a stud, and the third bay has a 3-light casement, all situated under the eaves.
The roof is hipped at the right-hand end and half-hipped at the left end, with a ridge chimney stack located in the fourth bay. The left end wall includes a door at ground floor level and three queen struts supporting the half-hip. At the rear, the timber framing is exposed on both floors and is less regular than at the front. This includes two full-height wall-posts in the second bay, along with various rails and studs. The first bay has a 3-light casement, the second bay has a very small 6-pane fixed window under the eaves, the fourth bay has a fixed window, and the fifth bay is covered by a lean-to addition.
