Description

The building comprises Bookham Railway Station, including the station house and footbridge, dating from the 1880s and built for the London and South Western Railway Company. The station is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with red tile roofs. Platform canopies are of cast iron, timber, and corrugated sheet, and the footbridge is of cast and wrought-iron.

The principal range fronts the down platform (south side) and incorporates the station master's house at the west end, a booking hall, waiting rooms, and cloakrooms. A parallel shelter stands on the opposite side of the track. Approximately 40 metres east of these is the footbridge. The architectural style is Vernacular Revival.

The south front consists of a single-storey, nine-bay main range with a flat canopy supported by ornamental cast-iron brackets over bays 4 to 7. A central doorway is flanked by segmental-headed sash windows; those in bays 8 and 9 are smaller. The roof is hipped at the right-hand end, with corniced ridge chimneys near each end. To the right are two further short sections, slightly set back and lower, one featuring three small windows and a hipped roof with a large rectangular, louvred ventilator. The other section has a similar window and a hipped roof at the right-hand end. The projecting wing of the Station House is L-shaped, two storeys high, and of two bays plus the wing. It has a doorway protected by a canopy in the angle, a two-light sash window to the left, a 16-pane sash window above the eaves, and a small two-light window above the door. A rectangular bay window at ground floor has two sashes, topped by a tripartite sash window. The roof is hipped at the left end and half-hipped over the wing, incorporating bargeboards. Tall corniced chimneys are located at the left end and on the right-hand side wall. The platform side of this range has similar openings, and is mostly sheltered by a pitched canopy supported by five cast-iron columns with foliated caps and ornamental brackets to the tie beams.

The opposite platform has a matching canopy with a brick rear wall, with a waiting room attached to the rear, featuring a segmental-headed doorway and two windows (boarded at the time of a 1988 survey).

The east-west footbridge is U-shaped, supported by square cast-iron columns at each end. It has latticed wrought-iron fences with square wooden newels, with turned finials. Straight flights of steps with half-landings, feature cast-iron open strings and ornamental open-work balusters.

The station forms a group with the tunnel entrance to the east and the bridge to the west.
