Description

Nos 8 and 9 Littleton Lane is a former hall house that has been divided, dating from the late 14th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed on a brick plinth, with some exposed framing and brick infill. There is also some stone infilling to the thin panel framing on the right side, and galletted sandstone cladding on the left. The roof is plain tiled, hipped with a gablet to the left and half hipped to the right, positioned at right angles to the street. The structure has two storeys and features a front stack to the left under an oversailing top, with an additional stack at the right end. It consists of four framed bays and has irregular fenestration, with four windows on the first floor (two of which are leaded) and four windows below. There is a half-glazed door to the right of centre and another door in the outshut at the right end.

On the street side, the building is underbuilt in stone with a braced frame exposed above. The garden front has four gabled dormers across the eaves and irregular ground floor fenestration.

The Surrey Archaeological Society describes the roof structure as lacking purlins; instead, each pair of rafters is joined by a collar, and vertical struts are attached to the tie beams that form the centre and ends of the hall. The strut at the centre truss of the hall is 5 inches wide with 2-inch chamfers, featuring a simple cushion base and broach stops at the upper end. Notably, on the east, parlour end of the house facing the street, there is a pair of eaves crucks, which are rare for Surrey.
