Description

The Shieling is a house dating from the late 16th century, with an extension added to the right in the late 17th century and alterations made in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed, with the rear exposed, while the left side features brown brick cladding on a sandstone plinth. The right side is constructed from coursed Bargate stone with ironstone galleting and brick dressings. The roofs are plain tiled, with the left side being lower and half-hipped, and the right side featuring a taller, tile-hung gable. The house has an L-shaped plan, oriented at right angles to the street, with a gabled wing on the right.

It has two storeys on the left side and one storey with an attic on the right, which includes a 19th-century, diamond-pane, leaded, through-eaves casement dormer. There is an end stack on the left and a rear ridge stack on the right. The left side has one first-floor window, while the right side features one three-light first-floor window set in a shallow break. The ground floor has two three-light camber head casements, and the gabled wing on the right has one casement window on each floor, with the ground floor window under a cambered head. A ribbed and part-glazed door is located at the junction of the two wings, accessed through a 19th-century open gabled porch.

On the right-hand return front, there is a plinth and basement. Each storey has three casement windows under gauged brick heads at the ground floor. There is also a framed single-storey shed at the right end.
