Description
The Chapel of St Catherine is a historic chapel built shortly before 1317 by Richard de Wauncey, the Rector of St Nicholas, on the site of an earlier chapel. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with grey ashlar stone dressings and is currently roofless. The chapel measures 45½ feet by 20½ feet internally and consists of three bays. It features buttresses and was originally adorned with pinnacles on the north and south sides, along with a taller quoined turret at the northwest corner. The arched windows are designed in the Decorated style and include hood mouldings. The central windows on the first floor of the north and south sides have been converted into additional doorways, likely in the late 18th century. There is also a large window on the east side.
The chapel was no longer in use by the 1540s but underwent restoration in 1793 by Robert Austen. Additionally, the chapel is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
